Spanish Gender Assignment in an Analogical Framework
نویسنده
چکیده
The focus of the study is two-fold: 1) to determine how much phonemic material must be considered in predicting nominal gender in Spanish; 2) to determine if gender assignment can be considered an analogical process. A database of Spanish nouns extracted from a frequency dictionary serves as the database for the present study, while the phonemic make up and syllable structure of the penultimate rime and final syllable serve as the variables. A number of analogical simulations using the Analogical Modeling of Language algorithm demonstrate that phonemic material from as far back as the penultimate rime may aid in gender assignment. Analogy is also shown to closely mirror Spanish speakers’ intuitions regarding the gender of unknown words. Gender assignment errors made by children also fall out of the analogical architecture. 1

متن کاملAnalogical Transfer of Problem Solutions within and between Languages in Spanish-English Bilinguals
Previous cognitive research on transfer of learning in bilingual participants has used simple tasks such as word learning. In the present study, an analogical transfer paradigm was used to examine transfer of high-level conceptual information between languages. Experiment 1 examined analogical transfer from a single source story to a target problem in the same or in a different language with Sp...
متن کاملSex, Syntax, and Semantics
Many languages have a grammatical gender system whereby all nouns are assigned a gender (most commonly feminine, masculine, or neuter). Two studies examined whether (1) the assignment of genders to nouns is truly arbitrary (as has been claimed), and (2) whether the grammatical genders assigned to nouns have semantic consequences. In the first study, English speakers’ intuitions about the gender...
متن کاملConcept Formation by Incremental Analogical Reasoning and Debugging
This chapter presents a model of learning by analogical reasoning. The model is based on two main ideas, namely, ( 1 ) that the analogies used in learning about an unfamiliar domain depend heavily on the use of previously formed causal abstractions in a familiar or base domain; (2) that these analogies are extended incremenrally to handle related situations. CARL is a computer program that lear...
متن کاملEvolution of gender stereotypes in Spain: traits and roles.
The aim of this study is twofold: to determine whether (and how) gender stereotypes have changed over time through a comparison of two different sets of data collected in 1993 (N=1255) and 2001 (N=1255) from a representative sample of the Spanish population, and to examine the relation between gender traits and roles and its stability over time. In addition, special attention is paid to the psy...
